ABSO-FREAKING-LUTELY MASTERPIECE

On the beginning of this year, I was for two weeks in Brno (in Czechia) with my friends. I noticed that Brno is in fact pretty close to Vienna, so I thought we couldn't miss this opportunity and organized a weekend trip for escape rooms there, where visiting Going Underground was meant to be its pinnacle. And, oh boy, it definitely was. For the record, it claimed #13 spot worldwide in Top Escape Rooms 2019 Project even though it was visited by less people than ones it was surrounded with in standings, hence it was tougher to get there based on the methodology behind this ranking.
It has just happened, that less than month earlier I visited another great escape room - American School Story (in Wrocław - Poland) and I noted some similarities. They both made me realize something that is now vital for my great escape room experience. It is a carefully crafted scenario that develops throughout the game. Have you ever been in an escape room, where you were told in the introduction "you are trapped somewhere by somebody and now you need to escape" and after an hour of solving puzzles you opened the last door, but that was it for the story? Of course you have been, it is like that in almost every escape room. But well, it is not the case here. That carefully planned scenario makes you feel like you are really the protagonist of the story, a central character of it. It is kind of ironic and paradoxal that at the same time you feel like a protagonist that everything depends on, which is a consequence of a fact that you are 1000th puppet that follows carefully planned scenario that goes more or less exactly the same every game. There are some games when what you do actually has an effect on how story develops, but I do not think that not having storyline branchings is a disadvantage and by no means I meant something bad in my previous sentence, because as I said, carefully planned developing scenario of events is basically now a key factor to me for a top tier experience. Somehow it happened that the third game that I hold in my personal TOP 3 up to date (Poltergeist in Prague) has this property as well. I can't look at escape rooms the same as I did before, after visiting these ones. Both American School Story and Going Underground made me think about them everyday for a week after the visit.
From the description on the site, I got an impression that this room has historical background. Its introductory video was definitely WW2-ish vibes. When I found that out, I have to admit I was not very excited about this theme. But do not let that discourage you, that room definitely has some surprises :).
Regarding production value and set design... Its quality is over the top. You can see great interior, all kinds of well prepared props, great use of available space and tech tricks that other places wouldn't be able to pull off. I would guess this was the most expensive room to build I've ever been to and you can see it at every step.
Puzzles are well-thought as well. There is a big variety of them. Almost all kinds of them, not repetitive at all, very well executed. There is even a very tricky and cute one that makes you very surprised and satisfied after you get an idea and I think that my reaction after one of my friends got an intended idea: "I am pretty sure we hacked this one", says it all.
I could go on and on mentioning good things about this escape room. And I think I could be writing this review for almost indefinitely long and I will still think that I missed something important that I should have mentioned. But this has to end somewhere.
And try to beat our time our time of 43 minutes :D (not a record though). Even though I can't say this was a 90-minutes experience for us, I hope I managed to take the best out of it and enjoy it to the fullest anyway.
And do not let the price put you off. This experience is worth any money. Ok, maybe not any :P, but I definitely think this was one of the best spent money in my life since ratio quality/price is still incredible, I would definitely not exchange this one into 10 other average escape rooms.
By the way, make sure to book your spot a lot in advance (you need to factor in the risk that there are no spots available for a weekend you are interested in if you are looking into it less than 2 weeks in advance).
On Crime Runners site it is called "a premium experience". I have to admit that such language is a bit off-putting to me, but as I hope I convinced you - not many other places deserve such titles like this one and I can definitely understand that apart from being appealing to enthusiasts, it has to convince casual customers as well.
One of my observations regarding Vienna's escape room market is that it doesn't offer you a lot of very good games. You would expect from basically any city that there are some good escape rooms there, some average ones, some poor ones, but that there are smooth gradual transitions between them. This is not the case in Vienna. You have this monster called Going Underground that absolutely crushes everything else. Do not get me wrong, there are some escape rooms there that are worth playing as well, for example I really enjoyed Western Jailbreak and Bergwerk, but the gap in quality is huge. If I were to put them in context of Polish ranking, I think Going Underground would take first place, while other ones would linger around TOP100 at best. Without this escape room, you could drop Vienna as an escape room hot-spot, but this one alone makes trip here worth it.
In my new rating scale that I decided to adapt (1-horrible, 2-ok, possibly flawed, 3-good, worth doing, 4-very good, 5-extraordinary) I grade this at:

But if I allowed myself rating out of 1-5 bounds, this would be 6546. Not having perfect score in "something original" is not a disgrace since I give 5s there if something basically changes the traditional format of a game and it indeed had traditional format, but it was the best one out of these traditional ones I've ever been to (and there are 187 ERs on my counter currently).

Tricky Western Jailbreak

Except Going Underground that absolutely outclasses everything you can find in Vienna, Time Busters claimed both top spots in my personal ranking out of remaining rooms we visited here, where Western Jailbreak took the first spot.
I would say interior was prettier in Bergwerk, but that one was not bad in that regard as well. I think main advantage of that room are very nice puzzles. Some of them really brought me joy and satisfaction. One was especially tricky and satisfying to get. I think this is a really solid position.

Unfortunately this room breaks golden rule of unwritten rules of escape rooms which is "if you can move something then it should not negatively influence your ability to complete a puzzle" and it breaks it *twice*. So be cautious when moving stuff around without a particular reason.

Warm up in Crime Runners

Patient Zero caught my attention since I was playing _some game_ when this term was present which I didn't know before (well, now I guess it gained some recognizability). As you can probably imagine, this is an escape room with an epidemic in central part of its story. Oh, good times when it was possible to visit an escape room and hear in an introduction story a light-hearted joke about coronavirus :)...
This is a fine escape room, production value is pretty good. Puzzles are fine, but on an easy side. Finale part brings some confusion, but we fortunately made it.
However, it is by no means comparable to the main title of this company - Going Underground. If you are in Vienna -YOU. MUST. VISIT. THIS. ROOM!!!

Wow, this is probably escape room which caused my feelings about its different parts to be the most polarized ever.
Whole game has really incredible production value. There is a very big space, interior and decorations are looking incredible, it has exactly the vibes you would expect it to have, game has well planned scenario of events that it follows, you could say a lot of money has been invested into it. In these regards, it was an outstanding experience.
But puzzles? Wow, they were so flat and poor. It is hard to even call them puzzles, you just need to find a few things and that's it more or less. Moreover I had a feeling that we are progressing really slowly and we may not manage to complete it in time, but it turned out it took us something like 25 minutes to escape cause amount of things to do was so low. Puzzle-wise, this is a disgrace to this market. Pretty sure these were the worst "puzzles" I've ever encountered. Maybe it is kind of property of some scary escape rooms, but if it is one, then I definitely do not like it and it doesn't have to be one as some other examples show otherwise.
That room advertises itself as "the scariest escape room in Europe". This is by far not true. I think for many people it is going to be really scary, there are some psychedelic parts, but it's not close to for example Poltergeist in Prague.
Moreover, I felt that customer service was really desultory. There were some conversations that went approximately like "-Did you have fun?, -Yeah, -Ok, cool"., I felt kind of like just another customer to be processed on a conveyor belt. And we were given a German soundtrack initially and I needed to call our MG and tell that we should be given English one and we were requested to go out of room for a minute when they adjusted things.

In terms of quality, this is very comparable to the Holmes room. That means, pleasant, classical, but not outstanding. Similarly, puzzles and interior were fine. This game has something that can surprise many players which is definitely a plus, however I preferred puzzles in Holmes room a bit more.

This was a rather classical and pleasant, but not outstanding experience. Puzzles were fine, interior was fine. However I do not remember any story behind it, just generic room with puzzles. Unfortunately not everything was perfectly prepared and our GM needed to enter our room three times. I would change a few things here. There is something very original in this room, but this thing alone is not sufficient to make it a very good game. But overally, we had fun.

Na drugą wizytę w firmie, w której miała miejsce moja najbardziej farciarska ucieczka w historii (w Duchu Kopalni) padło na odwiedzenie chatki człowieka z grupy społeczeństwa uwielbianej przez małych i dużych, grubych i chudych, matki, żony i kochanki - myśliwych. Okazała się to wizyta krótka, łatwa i przyjemna.
Chatka myśliwego pewnie nie jest tematem, w którym można się nie wiadomo jak wykazać pod względem wystroju, ale wnętrze rzeczywiście dobrze oddaje takowy klimat.
Pod względem zagadkowym jest w porządku. Niektóre pomysły na zagadki były rzeczywiście ciekawe, choć trochę też bardziej klasycznych. Aczkolwiek ogólny poziom trudności trzeba przyznać, że jest rzeczywiście niski, jeden z najprostszych ERów, w których byłem.. Poradziliśmy sobie z pokojem dość ekspresowo (24 minuty iirc), aczkolwiek nawet taki czas nie był bliski rekordowi, więc ja bym chętnie trochę zagadkowo wzbogacił ten pokój i polecał zdecydowanie początkującym lub pierwszakom. Dla takowych sądzę, że może to być dobre doświadczenie pokazujące tę rozrywkę od całkiem klasycznej strony.
Zabawa była spoko i myślę, że pokój warto odwiedzić. Duch Kopalni spodobał mi się trochę bardziej i pod względem wystrojowym/klimatycznym jak i pod względem zagadkowym, aczkolwiek ten pokój też nie jest zły (btw w tych pokojach spędziliśmy sumarycznie 45 minut xD). Biorąc pod uwagę oceny na lockme i opinie, co do Przeklętej Wróżby mam najwyższe oczekiwania, aczkolwiek ją postanowiłem sobie zostawić na deser w przyszłości.
W nowej skali oceniania, którą postanowiłem zaadaptować (dokładniejszy opis na moim profilu, w skrócie 1-kiepski, 3-solidny, 5-wyjątkowy):

Chatka myśliwego pewnie nie jest tematem, w którym można się nie wiadomo jak wykazać pod względem wystroju, ale wnętrze rzeczywiście dobrze oddaje takowy klimat.
Pod względem zagadkowym jest w porządku. Niektóre pomysły na zagadki były rzeczywiście ciekawe, choć trochę też bardziej klasycznych. Aczkolwiek ogólny poziom trudności trzeba przyznać, że jest rzeczywiście niski, jeden z najprostszych ERów, w których byłem.. Poradziliśmy sobie z pokojem dość ekspresowo (24 minuty iirc), aczkolwiek nawet taki czas nie był bliski rekordowi, więc ja bym chętnie trochę zagadkowo wzbogacił ten pokój i polecał zdecydowanie początkującym lub pierwszakom. Biorąc pod uwagę oceny na lockme i opinie, co do Przeklętej Wróżby mam najwyższe oczekiwania, aczkolwiek ją postanowiłem sobie zostawić na deser w przyszłości.

Ach, exit, exit. Moja ulubiona firma. Skradła mi serce Zdradą w Breslau, aby potem dołożyć do tego Lochy Króla Artura, które razem ze Zdradą swojego czasu tworzyły duo moich ulubionych pokoi w Polsce, a wszystko w długim okresie posiadania największego możliwego hypu jakiego się da doświadczyć na escape room, w kierunku Obłędu.
Mając takie pozytywne odczucia w kierunku tej firmy, nie mogłem ominąć także i tego pokoju, choć nie miałem do niego co prawda takich oczekiwań jak do pozostałych wymienionych. I słusznie, bo nie da się ukryć, że pokój nie dorównuje reszcie. Nie chcę powiedzieć, że jest słaby, ale po prostu poprzeczka zawieszona bardzo wysoko.
Co do zagadek, to pokój jest dość search-heavy. Części, gdzie trzeba się wykazać jakąś pomysłowością, logicznym myśleniem, kojarzeniem faktów są moim zdaniem bardzo proste i to właśnie na szukaniu się głównie spędza tutaj czas.
Pokój ma się w zamierzeniu wyróżniać swoim w pełni zautomatyzowanym systemem podpowiedzi, aby gra teoretycznie nawet nie wymagała innego nadzoru od MG niż jedynie takiego w kwestiach bezpieczeństwa. Dodatkowo graczom jest jeszcze pokazywany progress bar, aby sami byli w stanie podejmować świadomą decyzję na temat tego, czy potrzebują podpowiedzi, czy jeszcze nie. Z jednej strony wydaje się, że wszystko działa poprawnie, ale w naszym przypadku efekt końcowy okazał się raczej mierny. W pewnym etapie gry zablokowaliśmy się na długi okres, bo nie byliśmy w stanie znaleźć jednej ukrytej rzeczy. Progress bar w tym momencie był na etapie mniej więcej 30%, a minęła już połowa gry, więc postanowiliśmy wziąć podpowiedź. Okazało się, że wszystko co następowało było dla nas proste i progress bar nagle zaczął prędziutko iść do przodu i grę skończyliśmy z około piętnastominutowym zapasem, czego trudno się spodziewać biorąc pod uwagę, że po 30 minutach było za nami ~30% :P.
Pokój ma zdecydowanie klimat wojskowy, namiastkę tego można już zobaczyć w oryginalnym filmie wprowadzającym (do obejrzenia we własnym zakresie przed grą, nie jest pokazywany na miejscu). Niestety niezbyt zrozumiałem fabułę i wątek jakiegokolwiek poszukiwania tożsamości. Jak zostało napisane w jednej z poprzednich opinii, mam wrażenie że tutaj trochę pokojowi zabrakło pomysłu na siebie, czegoś co wyróżniałoby ten pokój na tle wielu innych, czegoś co zdecydowanie mają pozostałe uwielbiane przeze mnie pokoje exitu, bo ten automatyczny nadzór i system podpowiedzi to zdecydowanie nie jest coś, co może robić za podstawę dobrego doświadczenia.
Jednak nie ma też rzeczy, do których mógłbym się jakoś bardzo przyczepić, pokój jest w porządku i znajdują się w nim pewne ciekawe elementy. Najciekawszy wydaje mi się początek gry i ciekawe wykorzystanie [spojler] w dwóch różnych elementach gry. Na plus też właśnie dobre wkomponowanie zagadek w klimat wojskowy, używanie w nich odpowiedniego ekwipunku. Do tego całkiem dobrze zrealizowany i budujący emocje finał. Summa summarum bawiliśmy się oczywiście dobrze i myślę, że warto się wybrać do tego pokoju, ale za którąkolwiek ścianą tego pokoju znajdzie się lepszy.

Klimatyczne zakończenie trylogii

Ostatnia w kolejce z trylogii, po rozczarowującym klimatycznie Underworld i istotnie lepszym pod tym względem Pogrzebie, była Krypta, która pod względem klimatu i wystroju dała sobie radę najlepiej. Mniej więcej właśnie tak wyobrażałem sobie wygląd od samego początku trylogii.
Biorąc pod uwagę właśnie ten klimat, wystrój, [spojler], to wydaje mi się to najlepszy pokój z całej serii. Pisząc tę opinię najpierw zabrałem się za pisanie późniejszej części z wieloma wzajemnymi porównaniami pokoi z trylogii i tam zawarłem już całkiem sporo informacji o Krypcie, więc pozwolę sobie tu na początku już się oddzielnie nie rozwijać na jej temat.
Skoro to ostatni pokój z serii, to skuszę się na lekkie podsumowanie całości. Można się spodziewać, że skoro Underworld+Pogrzeb+Krypta tworzą trylogię, to są połączone fabularnie, że tworzą pod tym względem jedną spójną całość. O ile rzeczywiście trochę tak jest, to ogólnie ogół historii wydawał mi się dość mętny i nie tak rozwinięty jakbym się spodziewał po ciągu trzech pokoi trwających sumarycznie 4 godziny, więc wątek fabularny ogólnie oceniam raczej jako słaby. Wystrojowo i klimatycznie z każdym kolejnym pokojem jest coraz lepiej. Zagadkowo-jakościowo wydaje mi się, że Pogrzeb i Krypta porównywalnie, Underworld trochę niżej, ale też nie tak źle, tzn. wszędzie raczej były w porządku, choć nie pamiętam, aby któreś rzeczywiście bardzo przypadły mi do gustu. Zagadkowo-trudnościowo Underworld i Krypta średnie, Pogrzeb łatwy. Co do konkretnych zapadających w pamięć momentów, to tutaj na czoło wychodzi Pogrzeb.
Podsumowując, jeżeli ktoś jest przekonany, że wybierze się do wszystkich trzech pokoi, to pewnie najlepiej je odwiedzać po kolei (i warto rozważyć opcję wszystkich naraz w tygodniu, o której za chwilkę), jednak jeżeli ktoś nie jest tak pewien swoich zamiarów odwiedzenia wszystkich, to powiązania fabularne są moim zdaniem na tyle mało konkretne i mało istotne, że nie byłoby niczym bardzo zdrożnym złamać porządek i wybrać na początek moim zdaniem albo Pogrzeb albo Kryptę, w drugiej kolejności drugi z tych z pokoi, a na koniec paradoksalnie pierwszy chronologicznie Underworld.
Wspomnę jeszcze, że Brain Code oferuje możliwość przejścia całej trylogii naraz, gdzie wszystkie trzy pokoje są połączone w jedną bardzo długą grę, bez żadnego wychodzenia do poczekalni pomiędzy. Ale nie aż tak długą jak widniejące na lockme 120+90+90 minut, bo te czasy są zdecydowanie przeszacowane, a 120 i 90 minut w Underworld i Pogrzebie Arystokraty to jak to określałem "clickbaity", bo 90+60 bardziej by odpowiadało ilości contentu w nich, choć rozumiem, co kierowało firmą przy ich umieszczaniu. Suma naszych trzech czasów (każdy robiony w trójkę doświadczonych graczy) była na granicy 3 godzin, bodajże 81+36+65. Możliwość jest, bo nawet został przyłożony do tego nietrywialny wysiłek, aby coś takiego było możliwe, ale właśnie oficjalnie nie jest reklamowana, bo oferowanie tego mniej doświadczonym i mniej świadomym graczom miałoby sporo minusów, zatem wybrano drogę ustnego rozpropagowywania tejże informacji wśród fanów. Ale trzeba to uzgadniać osobno (przez stronę internetową bezpośrednio się nie da) i też o ile dobrze pamiętam taka możliwość jest tylko w dni powszednie.
Niestety dopadła nas złośliwość rzeczy martwych i system dowodzenia pokojem coś nawalił i trzeba było w gruncie rzeczy cały pokój zrestartować, co zajęło trochę czasu, ale wydaje mi się, że to rzadki wybryk elektroniki i zostaliśmy dobrze potraktowani w obliczu tego niefortunnego zdarzenia.
