      W XVII wieku z górskiej prefektury w Japonii zniknęła cała wioska. Żaden z mieszkańców nie został odnaleziony. Opuszczone domy stoją tam do dziś.
      Poza wyludnioną, upiorną wsią pozostała także legenda o świątyni rozpaczy, która rzekomo mieściła się w górskich lasach. Na przestrzeni wieków szukali jej amatorzy historii, antropolodzy oraz... demonolodzy, zainteresowani tajemniczym kultem Pana Żalu. W latach 80-tych zaginęło w tych rejonach także dwóch dziennikarzy BBC, którzy nigdy nie wrócili z reportażu kręconego w japońskiej wiosce duchów.
